Celebrating National Breastfeeding Month: Meet Liz Chang, IBCLC
Every August, we pause to celebrate the parents, babies, and families navigating the beautiful, often complicated journey of breastfeeding and the dedicated professionals who walk alongside them. This National Breastfeeding Month, we’re proud to kick off a new spotlight series introducing you to the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) who make up the heart of California’s breastfeeding support community and who you’ll soon be able to find through our brand-new LATCH Directory.
Meet Liz
Liz Chang’s connection to breastfeeding began long before she ever earned a certification. Growing up in Colombia as the daughter of a single mother of three, she remembers watching her mom breastfeed and bring home bottles of pumped breast milk — an early, formative picture of what it looks like for a mother to keep showing up for her children, one feeding at a time.
That early exposure planted a seed that grew during her schooling in Colombia, where she first studied women’s health and breastfeeding. She later built upon that foundation—and her time as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC)—by earning her advanced International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential, marking over a decade of dedicated service.
Since then, Liz has worked with hundreds of mothers, babies, and families across New York City, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and now serves families in Silicon Valley, California. Her experience spans private consulting, hospitals, and clinics, where she has helped set up comprehensive lactation programs, trained other healthcare professionals, and led breastfeeding support groups at both local and national breastfeeding coalitions. Beyond her core lactation credentials, she brings a multifaceted approach to patient care through advanced independent studies in diabetes and her work as a bilingual Spanish medical interpreter and translator, delivering a uniquely versatile range of support to families.
Through it all, one of her most defining experiences has been personal: nursing her own child for three years.
Liz believes deeply that the support a mother receives is what helps her succeed in meeting her nursing goals from a successful first latch to an understanding hug. She speaks with particular warmth about working with the whole family unit, mother, baby, and dad together, calling that dynamic one of the greatest joys of her work. It’s that same belief that drives her approach with every family: understanding the real challenges a mother faces, and helping her find the path that fits her life.
About LATCH Directory
Liz is one of the many dedicated IBCLCs you’ll be able to find through LATCH Directory, a new statewide tool from the California Breastfeeding Coalition (CBC) designed to connect families with qualified lactation support — quickly, easily, and in the language and setting that works for them. Whether a family is looking for in-person support, a bilingual provider, or someone with a specific area of expertise, LATCH Directory is built to make that search simple.
LATCH Directory is made possible through the CLASP-BC grant, and it’s just the first piece of a larger, statewide initiative CBC is building to strengthen breastfeeding support across California. Following the Directory’s launch, CBC will roll out a Warmline for real-time support, along with a Podcast to continue educating and connecting families and providers alike. This spotlight series is part of that same mission: helping families discover the incredible lactation providers already doing this work throughout the state.
