A Workplace Where Breastfeeding Thrives

PHFE WIC has built a culture where breastfeeding is not only supported—it’s celebrated. Since launching its Employee Perinatal Support Program in 1996, the organization has created a model for what true lactation equity and workplace wellness can look like.

The results speak for themselves: In 2024, 100% of employee parents initiated breastfeeding, with every baby exclusively breastfed for a full year. Even more remarkable—64% of children continued breastfeeding through their second year, aligning with AAP guidelines and highlighting just how effective workplace support can be.

At the core of PHFE WIC’s approach is consistent, wraparound care. Employees receive prenatal education, access to one of 27 IBCLCs, and dedicated support throughout their feeding journey. The organization offers paid lactation breaks, private pumping rooms equipped with hospital-grade pumps, and flexible return-to-work accommodations. Monthly support groups—open to employees and their partners—foster community and normalize lactation in the workplace.

PHFE WIC’s system of early and ongoing check-ins sets a new standard for employee care. In the first week back from leave, employees meet with their supervisor, the breastfeeding department, and a perinatal support team member to ensure they have everything they need. Follow-ups continue at one month, and again around 10–11 months to assess continued needs and provide one paid daily pumping break up to 24 months postpartum.

One employee shared:

“Work made breastfeeding a safe zone for me… The support groups made such a big impact in my journey because of all the encouragement and relatable experiences from other working moms.”

With a program that centers employees, community, and compassion, PHFE WIC shows what’s possible when lactation support is built into the DNA of a workplace.
