City of Long Beach DHHS & WIC celebrate breastfeeding with social media and milk drive
The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services Maternal Child Adolescent Health Program provided social media messaging daily during World Breastfeeding Week. The posts were made to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter daily from August 1-7, 2017. The focus of the messages was sustaining breastfeeding for working mothers and sustaining breastfeeding through toddler ages. Also, included were links to Lactation Accommodation Laws, where to find breastfeeding support in Long Beach, and where to go for more information. Lastly, all posts were written in both English and Spanish to reach as many Long Beach women as possible and the use of a Google Talk texting line was launched as an alternative way for women to reach the Maternal Child Adolescent Health Program Lactation Consultant.

The City of Long Beach Nutrition Services Division WIC Program had its first milk drive on Wednesday, August 23, 2018 at the City’s Department Health and Human Services to celebrate August World Breastfeeding month. Pauline Sakamoto, Executive Director of the Mothers’ Milk Bank, provided the WIC staff an excellent presentation. She inspired us to talk and refer breastfeeding mothers in the Long Beach community to consider donating any excess breastmilk to this population.
