TriCounties Breastfeeding Alliance – On the Move!

The TriCounties Breastfeeding Alliance (TCBA), re-instituted in 2010 and a newly granted 501c3 non-profit organization, is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of infants and families through education, outreach and advocacy which promotes and supports breastfeeding. TCBA includes Colusa, Sutter and Yuba Counties. According to the “Policy Update on California Breastfeeding and Hospital Performance” produced by California WIC Association and the UC Davis Human Lactation Center, Sutter County ranks 48th and Colusa County ranks 50th out of 50 counties. Our local area has the lowest breastfeeding rates in the state – and we are motivated and dedicated to changing the story for and with our families.

The TriCounties Breastfeeding Alliance along with our partnering agencies such as the First 5 Programs Colusa and Yuba County, Sutter County Children and Families Commission, public health departments, WIC, regional breastfeeding liaisons, IBCLCs and our local FQHCs, work continuously to promote and educate local health providers, businesses and parents about the benefits of supporting breastfeeding mothers and infants.

In 2015, The TCBA and the Sutter County Children and Families Commission were awarded the California Breastfeeding Coalition’s “Golden Nugget Award for Excellence in Reducing a Key Barrier to Breastfeeding” for their campaign focusing on reducing the risk for breast cancer by supporting breastfeeding. The TCBA appreciated the continued support of the Geweke Pink October Foundation in this effort. Please see this video of the Board of Supervisors presentation (begins at 57:45 minute mark).

Most recently, TCBA hosted their first conference in 5 years on May 5th at the Rideout Conference Center in Yuba City. Their featured guest speaker was Dr. Todd Wolynn, pediatrician and IBCLC from Pittsburgh, PA. It was a great success with over 100 attendees. “That’s amazing for our small community!” said Tina Lavy, MS, IBCLC, and TCBA President.
