SDCBC is partnering with Adaptive Parent Project, Rady’s Children’s Hospital, California State Council on Developmental Disabilities, and Gia’s Club to present a webinar dedicated to building communication strategies for supporting people with disabilities, as well as highlighting accessible lactation support.

This is a great webinar for clinicians, community health workers, lactation consultants, and advocates to learn tools and tips to better serve people with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities.

This talk will explore the intersection of communication and disability, underscoring the importance of effective communication when caring for patients with disabilities and describing strategies to do so.

Communication Strategies
-Establish a framework for disability
-Review disability-related legislature in the United States
-Define communication and complex communication needs.
-Explore the interplay between disability and health communication.
-Describe the patient-centered care framework.
-Review communication strategies to improve patient care for persons with disabilities.
-Discuss opportunities for education to improve communication in health disciplines.

Accessible Lactation
-To understand the different types of differences and disabilities that impact breast/chestfeeding
-To describe the challenges that lactating people with various differences and disabilities face during their breast/chestfeeding process
-To learn about adaptations to the environment to assist the lactating person
-To discuss support systems for lactation success
