In public health, the first 1,000 days, the period from pregnancy to a child’s 2nd birthday, represents a critical window to establish healthy dietary patterns, foster a responsive feeding environment, and reduce the risk of chronic disease. Human milk feeding and age-appropriate, nutrient-dense complementary foods are key for optimal growth and development during this period. Unfortunately, about 1 in 7 young children in the USA experience nutrition insecurity due to unjust structural barriers that affect historically marginalized communities.

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), with funding support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Nutrition Physical Activity and Obesity (CDC-DNPAO), works alongside local communities across the country to identify and implement strategies to improve infant and toddler nutrition security. NACCHO also developed an extensive resource repository of early childhood nutrition and breastfeeding resources, tools, and training materials to support and strengthen the local public health infrastructure, improve the availability of culturally responsive nutrition materials, and address gaps in individual, policy, systems, and environmental (I-PSE) interventions. These resources align with recommendations from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the CDC, and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

During this session, you’ll hear from NACCHO, the Nourish Foundation, and the Augusta University Research Institute. Webinar attendees will be able to describe barriers to infant and toddler nutrition security; identify partnership, leadership, and sustainability strategies to advance nutrition security for children under age 5; and discuss challenges and successes of current projects that advance optimal nutrition during the first 1,000 days. 1.5 L-CERPS, 1.5 CPEUs pending approval.
