Language Matters: Changing the Narrative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders presented by Tonya Lang, MPH, CHES, IBCLC, AANHPI Lactation Collaborative
The continued invisibility of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) are rooted in distinct forms of racism, including the model minority myth for Asian Americans and the enduring effects of colonization and intergenerational trauma for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. During AANHPI Heritage Month, we will discuss language diversity as a strength; examine the language used by others to describe our communities; and explore how we can improve data equity for our communities
Objectives:
- Describe the diversity that exists under the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) umbrella.
- Identify systemic barriers that contribute to framing language diversity as a problem in lactation and maternal health care.
- Describe steps towards achieving data equity for AANHPIs
