Perinatal Substance Exposure (PSE) in infants continues to remain a challenge to the healthcare system and healthcare providers. The spectrum of exposure spans from prescription medications, all the way to street drugs. This presentation will discuss drug classifications and implications for impact on the fetus and neonates. Substances exposure and its management is a complex issue involving societal challenges, healthcare costs, and challenges in the management of these patients within the current healthcare environment. Current management strategies will be discussed along with a look at long term outcomes. Limitations in knowledge and needed research will be touched on.
