The first 1,000 days represent the period from conception/pregnancy through a child’s second birthday. This is the critical window for establishing healthy dietary patterns that promote healthy growth and development. Fostering a positive feeding environment and healthy eating with adequate nutrition during this time period promotes lifelong health by in the risk of obesity and associated cardiometabolic disorders later in life. For the first time, there is an entire chapter with specific nutrition guidelines for infants and toddlers in the 2020-2025 edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Unfortunately, about 1 in 7 babies in the United States experience food insecurity. Therefore, many families are unable to meet national dietary recommendations.

NACCHO has hosted three regional convenings with over 50 local-level public health and nutrition professionals and community members, and one national partners’ convening to identify solutions to advance nutrition security in communities of color for families with young children. In addition, NACCHO partnered with nutrition experts from different communities to co-create culturally diverse nutrition materials for infants and toddlers based on the Dietary Guidelines.

During this webinar, a diverse panel of speakers will provide an overview of the landscape of the first 1,000 days of nutrition in the United States, launch the convenings’ summary report and nutrition materials for Chinese and Vietnamese families with young children. You will also hear about other culturally diverse materials that are currently under development.
