How You Can Take Action to Protect Breastfeeding and Family Health Programs

Progress in lactation and maternal health equity doesn’t happen by chance, it happens because people speak up, organize, and advocate for the programs families rely on.

Across California and the nation, safety-net programs like WIC, Medi-Cal, and CalFresh make it possible for families to access nutritious food, healthcare, and lactation support. These programs are at the heart of breastfeeding equity. When these programs are strong, families thrive. When they’re at risk, the progress we’ve made towards lactation equity and increased lactation initiation is at risk.

You can help protect that progress.

Here are simple, meaningful ways to take action today.

Urge Congress to Fully Fund WIC

WIC supports nearly half of all infants born in the U.S., providing access to healthy foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support. Funding shortfalls could force states to turn eligible families away for the first time in decades.

Contact Your Lawmakers About Medi-Cal and CalFresh

Medi-Cal and CalFresh are two of California’s most critical family support systems covering millions of pregnant and postpartum people and helping families afford nutritious meals. Proposed federal cuts could reduce access to healthcare and food assistance across the state.
