California Breastfeeding Coalition Official Statement on Southern California Fires

January 10, 2025

To Our Southern California Community,

Our hearts are heavy as wildfires in Southern California have left so many families to face unimaginable challenges. The California Breastfeeding Coalition (CBC) stands with every parent, caregiver, and community member affected by this crisis. Please know that you are not alone— at the CBC, our mission is clear: to protect, promote, and support lactation for all California families. In moments like these, our commitment to equitable access to resources becomes even more vital. Whether you’re seeking immediate assistance or looking to help others in need, we’re here to guide you.

Support for Breastfeeding and Chestfeeding Families
Breastfeeding and chestfeeding remains critically important during emergencies, providing essential nutrients and protection for infants. If you or someone you know needs support, these resources may be of help:

Local Resources: Connect with local breastfeeding coalitions across California to find personalized assistance in your area. Find support here. BreastfeedLA also has an incredible resource directory that includes a resources map to help find support. Access the resources map here.

Donor Milk: If you’re in need of donor milk or wish to contribute, you can use The Human Milk Banking Association of America’s Find a Milk Bank map. We also recommend checking out our How to Become a Donor section on our website if you are interested in donating human milk.

Donating Items & Volunteering: BreastfeedLA is collecting donations of baby items such as breast pumps, diapers, wipes, baby clothes and other essentials to assist families affected by the fires. If you have items you’d like to donate please contact Brenda at  bvieyra@breastfeedla.org with the items you wish to donate as well as your city. If you’d like to volunteer at a donation site or offer lactation services you can also contact Brenda with your availability.

Emergency Preparedness: The CDC has a great guide for safe breast milk storage and formula preparation during emergencies that you can access. If you are being affected by the Southern California fires this is a great resource.  Infant Feeding in Emergencies Guide.

We believe in the strength of community and the power of compassion. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure every family in California has access to the resources and support they need.

In solidarity,

Jasmine Pettis Marquez, MPH, IBCLC
