WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum – Train the Trainer

This train the trainer three-day course is designed for State and local agency breastfeeding coordinators, peer counselor coordinators and others who provide breastfeeding training for WIC staff. This training is not intended for peer counselors.

Description

The new curriculum is based on the Visual Language approach used in the USDA Food and Nutrition Service curricula for peer counselors, Loving Support Through Peer Counseling: A Journey Together.  The training reflects current science and program guidance, and contains updated resources and materials. The curriculum will replace the currently available trainings for WIC peer counselors and other staff, i.e., Loving Support© Through Peer Counseling: A Journey Together and Using Loving Support© to Grow and Glow in WIC. The content is designed for trainers learning how to facilitate learning to other WIC nutrition and breastfeeding staff, as well as clerical support staff.

Materials are structured in a flexible format based on key topic areas to enable trainers to quickly and easily access and present the content most appropriate for their audience group. A “master platform” contains a number of topical platforms, including counseling strategies, WIC and Breastfeeding, and breastfeeding clinical information in  “Breastfeeding Essentials” platforms. The “Breastfeeding Essentials” platforms address such topics as preparing for breastfeeding, supporting normal breastfeeding in the hospital, early days, and throughout the first year, problem-solving common concerns, and assessing and making referrals. Presenter Notes are included to provide guidance for trainers.

All platforms contain content relevant to various levels of learning. Each level builds on one another to provide more advanced levels of content appropriate to the roles of staff in that level. The “train the trainer” events throughout California will focus on Level 1-3 content. Level 4 content is under development and will be rolled out by USDA in late Spring 2019. These levels include:

  • Level 1 – for all WIC staff
  • Level 2 – for peer counselors and other WIC staff who provide breastfeeding education and support
  • Level 3 – for CPAs and breastfeeding coordinators
  • Level 4 – for WIC Designated Breastfeeding Experts (those who receive referrals to manage more complex breastfeeding challenges)

Each attendee will be given presenter notes, activities, handouts and cheat sheets within a 3 ring binder.
